On April 16, the Auburn Planning Commission held a public hearing regarding the Land Use and Housing elements of the 2044 Comprehensive Plan Update. MBAKS worked with Auburn staff and supported the update, which incorporates middle housing regulations making Auburn compliant with HB 1110, changes zoning downtown, and consolidates several land use and zoning designations into a more streamlined set. The update will also modify development regulations to make it easier to provide these more diverse housing types and allows ADUs to fit into the definition of middle housing in the city’s code.

Core changes to the land use elements include eliminating the use of floor area ratio (FAR) in dwelling unit capacity, instead allowing a dwelling unit per acre figure based on minimum zone lot size, minimum unit size, and the difference between the two, ensuring a homebuilder does not lose density on a lot solely because of the zoning.
