Seattle Proposes Code Changes to Support Electric Vehicle Readiness

As part of Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan’s Climate Action Strategy, the Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) released a proposal that would require power outlets for electric vehicle charging in new development that includes off-street parking (i.e. “EV readiness”).

The legislation would require that a specific number of parking spaces include (pre-) wiring and electrical outlets necessary to be considered “EV ready,” to enable installation of charging equipment/stations. Read the draft ordinance, director’s report, and SEPA determination.

Last spring, your association submitted a letter outlining our concerns with earlier drafts of the legislation and we met with SDCI staff to urge changes to make the initiative less costly and onerous for builders.
